Next to Normal is a powerful and emotionally resonant musical that explores family, love, grief, and mental health with rare honesty and compassion. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, this contemporary musical tells the story of a family struggling to find balance in the wake of loss, illness, and the complexities of caring for one another.Told through a dynamic, rock-infused score and deeply human storytelling, Next to Normal offers an unflinching look at the impact of mental illness. Not only on those who live with it, but on the people who love them. As the characters navigate memory, medication, and the desire to move forward, the musical asks what it truly means to be “normal,” and whether such a thing even exists.​Both intimate and expansive, Next to Normal blends raw emotion with moments of humour, hope, and resilience. It is a story about the weight families carry, the silences they keep, and the courage it takes to confront difficult truths. Challenging, moving, and ultimately compassionate, Next to Normal is a musical that sparks conversation and stays with audiences long after the final note. Next to Normal contains mature themes and subject matter that some audience members may find distressing. The production explores mental illness, grief, loss, trauma, and family conflict, and includes references to suicide and the use of prescription medication.
