Following Bob Marley&rsquo;s death in 1981, he gained international attention for his distinctive, energetic style. His early success boosted the popularity of toasting&mdash;the reggae form of rapping&mdash;and helped position dancehall as reggae&rsquo;s next major sound. He also became known for dancehall&rsquo;s &ldquo;slack&rdquo; lyrics, which often featured casual violence, sexism and crude humour. Explicit sexuality was his signature theme, reaching a level of frankness rarely heard in Jamaica at the time. Although critics condemned this material, it also contributed to his early popularity. Yellowman is still one of the most verbally nimble toasters of his time, with a loose, easy flow, a talent for improvisation, and a definite wit in his wordplay. Plus, all the boasting about his prowess on the mic or in the bedroom had to be over the top to be convincing: true to his stage name, Yellowman is an albino, which carries a tremendous social stigma in Jamaica.
